For artists and photographers

Sign the work like you meant it.

The corner of a print is the last decision in the piece. A signature designed for it belongs there; a scrawl apologises.

Twenty original directions for your full name, in about a minute. Free to try; the kit is $19, if one of them is worth keeping.

Drawn for Mina Kovac

Three directions the studio would draw for artists and photographers

Confident · flowing · fully readable

Readable, for the website, the price list and the collector who wants to look you up.

Understated · sharp · signature-legible

Small and sure, for the margin of a print where the mark should not compete with the work.

Commanding · flowing · signature-legible

For the canvas and the certificate of authenticity — a mark with the confidence of the piece.

Studio drawings of an example name, made by the same engine that draws the paid kit and chosen on the briefs that suit this moment. Yours are drawn on your own name — twenty of them — and you choose.

The moment

Why this is the time

A signature on a piece of work does two things at once. It claims the work, and it becomes part of it. Most artists spend years on the second part of that sentence and about four seconds on the first, and the result is a mark that fights the image it sits beside.

The studio draws the mark as a design object: economical enough to sit in a margin, confident enough to carry a certificate, and one gesture so it is the same on every edition. You keep a small version, a full version and a readable one.

If you sign with a first name, initials or a studio name, type that. The studio draws what you intend to sign with.

The kit

What you keep

  • A margin signature, a full-presence signature and a readable version, one hand.
  • SVG and transparent PNG for certificates, a website, watermarks and printed materials.
  • The written report, with the construction of each mark set out so you can hold it in pencil, pen or brush.
  • The lesson and practice sheets, for an edition of fifty that is signed fifty times the same way.

How it works

Three steps, one question

  1. Type the full name. No brief, no style quiz. The name is the brief.
  2. See twenty directions, drawn in about a minute, from fully readable to signature-legible.
  3. Keep three. The files, the report and the lesson arrive straight after checkout.

Questions

Asked before buying

Can I sign with initials or a studio name?

Yes. Type exactly what you intend to put on the work — a first name, two initials, a studio name — and the studio draws that.

Will it work in pencil on paper and in paint on canvas?

The lesson teaches the stroke order, and a stroke order is independent of the tool. A mark designed as one gesture translates between media; a traced scribble does not.

Can I use the vector as a watermark?

Yes. The SVG scales cleanly to any size and the files are yours to use on your own work.

How much is it?

Seeing the twenty directions is free. The kit is $19.
