For authors

A signature worth the title page.

Someone is going to hand you your own book and ask you to sign it. That moment deserves a signature you designed, not the one you use at the pharmacy.

Twenty original directions for your full name, in about a minute. Free to try; the kit is $19, if one of them is worth keeping.

Drawn for Jonah Reyes

Three directions the studio would draw for authors

Confident · flowing · fully readable

Readable, for the bookplate, the limited edition and the reader who wants to make it out.

Commanding · flowing · signature-legible

The signing-table signature: a gesture that fills a title page and takes two seconds.

Understated · sharp · signature-legible

The one for the publishing contract and the royalty statement — the same hand, at work.

Studio drawings of an example name, made by the same engine that draws the paid kit and chosen on the briefs that suit this moment. Yours are drawn on your own name — twenty of them — and you choose.

The moment

Why this is the time

A book signing is a line of people, each watching you write your name. It is the most public thing most writers ever do with a pen, and almost nobody prepares for it. The signature is improvised at the first event and then repeated, flaws included, for the rest of a career.

The studio draws the signature for the page: a mark with enough presence to hold a title page on its own, made as one gesture so it is still good at the hundredth copy. You also keep a readable version for bookplates and a working version for the contracts.

Type the name that appears on the cover. If you write under a pen name, that is the name to sign, and the studio draws it.

The kit

What you keep

  • A signing-table signature, a readable bookplate version and a working signature, one hand.
  • SVG and transparent PNG for bookplates, a website, a newsletter and a printed colophon.
  • The written report, so you know how the mark is built and where each version belongs.
  • The lesson and practice sheets, for a signature that is as good at copy two hundred as copy one.

How it works

Three steps, one question

  1. Type the full name. No brief, no style quiz. The name is the brief.
  2. See twenty directions, drawn in about a minute, from fully readable to signature-legible.
  3. Keep three. The files, the report and the lesson arrive straight after checkout.

Questions

Asked before buying

Can you draw my pen name?

Yes. The studio draws whatever name you type. Many authors sign only the pen name, or only the first name; type it the way you want to sign it.

What makes a signature good for a title page?

Presence and economy. It has to hold a lot of white space on its own, and it has to be quick enough to repeat for a line of people. The studio draws several directions built for exactly that.

Can I use it on a bookplate or my website?

Yes. The kit includes vector artwork and a transparent PNG, and the signature is yours to use on your own work.

How much is it?

Seeing the twenty directions is free. The kit is $19.
