For lawyers and notaries

A signature that looks the same on page one and page ninety.

Filings, affidavits, engagement letters, notarial certificates. In your work, a signature is a record. It should be one you can reproduce on demand.

Twenty original directions for your full name, in about a minute. Free to try; the kit is $19, if one of them is worth keeping.

Drawn for Catherine Doyle

Three directions the studio would draw for lawyers and notaries

Confident · sharp · fully readable

Fully readable, for the certificate, the filing and anything a clerk will compare against a card.

Understated · flowing · signature-legible

The working signature for correspondence and engagement letters, calm and quick.

Commanding · sharp · signature-legible

The one for the firm’s letterhead and the closing dinner card: more presence, same hand.

Studio drawings of an example name, made by the same engine that draws the paid kit and chosen on the briefs that suit this moment. Yours are drawn on your own name — twenty of them — and you choose.

The moment

Why this is the time

In most professions a signature is a formality. In yours it is compared. A notary’s signature is checked against a sample on file; an attorney’s appears on filings that will be read years later. A signature that drifts invites a question nobody wants to answer.

The studio draws for reproducibility first. Each direction is a single planned gesture with a stroke order you are taught, so the mark you put on a certificate in March is the one you put on an affidavit in November.

You keep a fully readable formal version and a faster working one, and the report sets out exactly how each is built so you can hold it.

The kit

What you keep

  • A formal, fully readable signature and a quick working version, both the same hand.
  • Transparent PNG and SVG for e-filing, engagement letters and letterhead.
  • The written report, with the construction of each mark set out plainly.
  • The lesson and practice sheets — the stroke order, so the signature is reproducible by design.

How it works

Three steps, one question

  1. Type the full name. No brief, no style quiz. The name is the brief.
  2. See twenty directions, drawn in about a minute, from fully readable to signature-legible.
  3. Keep three. The files, the report and the lesson arrive straight after checkout.

Questions

Asked before buying

Is a designed signature acceptable for legal documents?

A signature is whatever mark you adopt as yours and use consistently. The studio designs the mark and teaches you to write it; what any particular court, registry or jurisdiction requires of a signature is for you to confirm.

Will my notary commission require a new sample?

Rules differ by state and country. If you change your signature, check whether your commissioning authority wants an updated specimen. The kit gives you a clean one to provide.

Can I keep my current signature and just make it consistent?

The studio draws fresh directions rather than tracing an existing hand. Many of the twenty will be close in spirit to what you do now, only planned, and the lesson makes whichever you choose repeatable.

How much is it?

Seeing the twenty directions is free. The kit is $19.
